“Hail, hail the lucky ones,” I refer to the band Pearl Jam. They are the last one standing of the big four Seattle grunge bands that still has the original members. They have been making audio gold since October 1990. A legacy such as theirs ensured that they would fans for life, I know I have liked them since I was a kid as have so many other people, if the comments on YouTube are anything to go by. So when they release new music simultaneously announcing a new world tour, it makes headlines.
The new single, “Dark Matter” is the title track of upcoming new album. The song, and presumably the rest of the album, is produced by Andrew Watt. Mr. Watt is known for producing music for heavy hitters such as Post Malone, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Ozzy Osbourne, and The Rolling Stones. He has worked with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder previously on the singer’s third album, Earthlings.
The song starts out with Matt Cameron just banging out on his drum kit followed by Jeff Ament’s dirty bass work. This song is arguably one of their heaviest songs since at least the avocado self-titled album, perhaps even since Riot Act. While their softer more melodic side is very appreciated, they need to reembrace their heavier roots and this is a good start.
Thought provoking is the chorus. It could mean anything political of our leaders making mistakes that we as citizens pay for, or it could mean a lot closer to home for some people. The style of the chorus, the way Eddie belts out remind me of One Day as a Lion by One Day as a Lion.
Final Thought: We highly recommend giving this single a try as it will be a delight to life-long fans while also giving a more modern and fresh sound for new listeners. The song is wonderful harbinger of what is to come with the new album. Hopefully there will be more on the heavy side, as this song suggests but at any rate, new Pearl Jam is usually good Pearl Jam.
