Live Review

It’d been a long three year wait for US rockers PVRIS to make a trip back to the UK. With their last tour consisting of intimate shows, fans have been eagerly waiting for their full-scale performance to return. Paying visits to four major cities, Lyndsey Gunnulfsen; otherwise known as Lynn Gunn, and co make a stop off in Birmingham to play a sold out show.

Kicking off proceedings was alternative singer-songwriter from Massachusetts, Charlotte Sands. Having recently opened for My Chemical Romance on their UK dates and being all set to play this year’s Slam Dunk Festival, it’s safe to say they’re well on their way to super stardom. Taking to the stage the venue was filling out nicely, with punchy opening number Tantrum receiving a very warm welcome. A sea of vivid blue hair flips paired with powerhouse vocals captivated the room. Armed with an enthusiastic live band that perfectly mirrored Sands’ energetic on-stage persona, thirty minutes had soon passed much to the audiences upset as final track Dress was introduced. Declaring the show her best yet, Sands stormed the stage as if her own - making it one hell of a debut performance in Birmingham.

Next to grace the stage was Maggie Lindemann, a pop punk princess who is well and truly taking the world by storm. With over a billion streams already under her belt, the Pretty Girl and she knows it singer steps onto the stage to enormous cheers from the packed crowd - many of whom are noticeably in attendance purely for Lindemann. Her spellbinding and enchanting set consists solely of numbers from her hit debut album SUCKERPUNCH, released just a mere four months ago. Huge singles self sabotage and you’re not special are pinnacle moments of the set and send the crowd into a frenzy. With her next UK appearances already being confirmed, it’s evident that the love for Maggie Lindemann overseas is strong. Whilst being confirmed for this year’s Slam Dunk Festival, Lindemann will also be headlining some sold out venues of her own. One thing’s for certain, those who weren’t already acquainted with Maggie Lindemann, will now be wanting more.

A rapid change over and the unveiling of scaffolding draped in plants could only mean one thing - headliners PVRIS were next to take the stage. Launching into 2022 release Animal, followed by Monster were clear indicators for an action packed night ahead. However, it was the third song of the set that really stole the hearts of adoring fans, as Mirrors from their debut White Noise was performed. Frontwoman Lynn Gunn is breathtaking. She exudes the perfect balance between bold and vulnerable like no other. The way she adapts the tone of her voice to convey a particular mood or emotion is enthralling, and the way the production ‘mirrors’ that through ominous lighting is pure genius. This tour saw the UK debut of many PVRIS hits, including anthem Dead Weight and more recent release, Anywhere but Here. Their sixteen song set spans tracks from their almost ten-year long discography, with the absence of one or two fan favourites. With that being said, PVRIS deliver one hell of a performance that is crammed with riffs, passion and an abundance of creativity. Not to mention being treated to Goddess, a sample from their forthcoming third studio release. A spine-tingling encore consisting of My House and Hallucinations rounds the night off perfectly.
